Dr. Oz reported that, according to medical professionals, the second wave of the swine flu is coming. He informed viewers of the symptoms of H1N1 and how to prevent it.

On the Dr. Oz show, with the help of leading medical professionals, Dr. Oz discussed prevention techniques for the swine flu and how to prepare for this pandemic.

Basics of Swine Flu

Dr. Oz informed viewers that the swine flu originated in humans and birds and combined in pigs. He reported that H1N1 is a deadly infection that could kill up to 90,000 people living in the United States during the 2009-2010 flu season. The swine flu is extremely contagious and can spread through the population at a fast rate.

One of the medical professionals on his show reported that the United States is prepared for this pandemic due to four things which are surveillance, community mitigation, vaccination, and communication. The virus has a predilection for younger people unlike other types of flu. The most vulnerable populations are pregnant women, young children, and people with existing medical conditions.

Symptoms of H1N1

Dr. Oz covered the symptoms of the swine flu with the audience and viewers. For the first one to two days, a person infected with H1N1 will not have symptoms. The third day the person would start to feel the normal aches and pains that one gets with the regular flu. The fourth and fifth day the person will get other flu symptoms such as a sore throat and diarrhea. Dr. Oz stated that the seventh to tenth day is where one can tell a difference between the swine flu and the regular flu. He reported that a person has the swine flue if they start to get more breathing problems instead of getting better.

Dr. Oz stated that a person should seek medical treatment if they’re having difficulty breathing, experiencing dizziness and confusion, or vomiting so much that he can’t keep fluids down. He reported that parents should take their children to a doctor if they’re skin color is bluish gray or they’re nonresponsive. Dr. Oz said to immediately seek medical treatment if your child begins to get better and then gets sick again.

Prevention of the Swine Flu

Dr. Greg Poland answered questions about the swine flu. He said that it’s important to get the H1N1 vaccination as soon as it’s available. Dr. Poland reported that trials have revealed that this is a safe option and encouraged special populations such as pregnant women, young children, healthcare workers, and people with chronic medical problems to get the vaccination. Dr. Poland stated that the vaccination does not protect someone until they’ve had the vaccination for two weeks.

Dr. Oz announced five things that everyone needs in their household to prevent the swine flu. The five things he recommended are as follows:

  • Basic cleaners including antibacterial wipes
  • Probiotics such as garlic, onions, and yogurt
  • Supplements including vitamin D and North American ginseng
  • Emergency products including a thermometer, electrolyte replacements, surgical masks, and a month’s supply of food and pharmaceuticals
  • Family members who have received the flu vaccination

Dr. Oz discussed the symptoms of the swine flu, how to prevent the virus, and when to seek medical treatment on the Dr. Oz show.
