The Dr. Oz Show has launched and its ratings are soaring. Dealing with issues from ADD to yoga - not to mention the H1N1 virus - Dr. Oz offers a real health education.

Move over, "Dr. Phil" -- Oprah Winfrey's latest protege is set to absorb a substantial daytime television ratings share. Unlike Phil McGraw, Dr. Mehmet Oz is an actual medical doctor with a litany list of respectable and presitigous credentials -- not a mere holder of a Ph.D. from the second-tier Lone Star Conference's North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.

Dr. Oz Show Most Celebrated Oprah Winfrey Endorsement Since Barack Obama

Through no surprise, The Dr. Oz Show became an immediate television sensation. Oz has been a regular on the Oprah show and has widely been considered Winfrey's greatest pet project since the campaigns that elected Barack Obama as the Democrat presidential candidate and eventually president.

Based on the final national ratings for the week of Sept. 14, The Dr. Oz Show opened with the highest average audience household rating (2.3) since CBS Television Distribution’s Rachael Ray for the week of Sept. 18, 2006. Oz is also in the business of setting TV records: the show drew the highest gross average audience household rating (2.4) since CBS’ Dr. Phil seven years ago.

Furthermore, The Dr. Oz Show tied Warner Bros.’ Ellen for second (beyond Oprah) in key women 25-54 years old (1.5), with a third-place finish in households (behind Oprah and CBS’ Dr. Phil).

Dr. Oz Labelled "America's Doctor" by Oprah Winfrey

Oz's credentials are phenomenal. He is Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Columbia University, directs the Heart Assist Device Program, and is a founder of the Complementary Medicine Program at New York - Presbyterian Hospital. He has authored more than 350 original publications, book chapters, abstracts, and books and has received several patents. Oz' research interests include heart replacement surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery and healthcare policy. Oz also serves as a scientific advisor to MDLinx, a leading physician portal.

Both Oz and his wife, a reiki practitioner, support the development of alternative medicine. However, there exists a rift between those who subscribe to conventional medical practitioning and those who champion the cause of holistic medicine. Critics allege that Oz may be promoting unproven and potentially harmful alternative medicine practices on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Oz regularly appears in surgical scrubs on the show's set in Chicago and has been labelled "America's Doctor" by Winfrey.

Dr. Oz Website an Encyclopedia of Health Information

The Dr. Oz show has a natural marriage to its website www.doctoroz.com, in which users can tap into a vast wealth of relevant, current health information. The following sample question and answer is extracted from doctoroz.com:

Q. How does olive oil help to clean out my arteries?

A. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats which help raise your HDL cholesterol—the "healthy" cholesterol carried through your body by high-density lipoproteins. It actually helps clean out your arteries as it moves through. When it comes to HDL, higher is better—so an HDL level of 60 versus one of 39 will make the average 55-year-old woman four years younger.

Vegetables and flavonoids have also been shown to raise HDL. In fact, you should make sure that healthy fat makes up about 25 percent of your daily calories.

Dr. Oz Discusses Preventative Measures Against Swine Flu (H1N1 Virus)

In these heady times where certain pandemics like the H1N1 virus seem to be ubiquitous, Dr. Oz again takes aim at preventative measures such as in this extract from doctoroz.com:

Q. How can I protect myself and others against swine flu?

A. You can help protect yourself against infection by the swine flu virus and other viruses by:

  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based cleaners.
  • Staying away from sick people. If you are sick, you should stay away from other people as much as possible.
  • Not touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Covering your mouth with tissues when you cough or coughing into your shirt rather than your hands. Dispose of the tissues, and then wash your hands.

If you have symptoms of swine flu or any other type of flu, you should contact your health care provider, especially if you want to get a prescription for antiviral drugs. In addition, it is very important to contact your health provider if you have symptoms and:

  • You have recently travelled to Mexico, or to other locations that have had confirmed cases of swine flu. Many U.S. states have had confirmed cases.
  • You have been in contact with someone who has traveled to Mexico or other locations that have had confirmed cases of swine flu.
  • You are having difficulty breathing.
  • You cannot stop vomiting.
  • You are experiencing extreme change in behavior or in your mental state.

By taking action before making yourself vulnerable, you stand a much greater chance of resisting the strain.

Based on an initial warm reception and what appears to be an expansive, dedicated following, it looks like The Dr. Oz Show is here to stay.
