On the September 17, 2009 Dr. Oz show, Tim Gunn worked with two women who suffered from breast cancer to help them reinvent their style. Dr. Oz informed the audience on what to look for in healthy urine, how to increase a person’s metabolism, and how to avoid bathroom germs.

Tim Gunn Assisted Cancer Survivors

Dr. Oz partnered with Tim Gunn to help a mother and daughter who suffered with breast cancer for the past year. Dr. Oz reported that he wants to celebrate the human spirit on his show and brought the fashion expert, Tim Gunn, onto the show, because he understands beauty. Dr. Oz said that people who don’t feel good about themselves don’t heal as fast and stressed the importance that fashion can have on a person. The mother and daughter were reunited with two family members after their makeovers who they hadn’t seen due to financial restrictions and health factors.

Dr. Oz Discusses Healthy Urine

A person’s kidney produces urine and passes it to the bladder for excretion. The bladder sends signals to the brain when it needs to be emptied. Dr. Oz informed the viewers on how to know if their kidneys are functioning properly. He reported that the healthiest urine runs clear enough that a person could read through it which means that the person is getting enough liquids. Dr. Oz said that if a person’s urine is a bluish color, it could be due to antibiotics or medications and if it’s red, it could be due to bleeding. He reported that some B vitamins turn the pee a bright yellow. Dr. Oz stated that urine that smells sweet like fruit may indicate diabetes and pungent smells may indicate that someone ate certain vegetables.

Increased Metabolism

Dr. Oz gave the viewers tips on how to increase their metabolism which will help them burn fat and calories. He reported that spicy foods, coffee or green tea, and exercise increase one’s metabolism. He reported that people have to exercise for long periods of time to burn fat.

Dr. Oz Answers Audience Questions

One audience member asked Dr. Oz why she has to urinate when she gets nervous or has to talk to a large crowd. He reported that the reflex between the brain and bladder gets disrupted when a person becomes stressed. Another audience member asked what she should do when her brain is racing at night. He stated that she should keep a notepad by her bed to write down thoughts, address things that are on her mind, and meditate with deep breathing.

Decrease Bathroom Germs

Dr. Oz collected specimens, a shower cap and a toothbrush in a cup, from two audience member’s bathrooms. He found bacteria on the audience member’s cap that can cause skin infections, and three types of harmful bacteria on the audience member’s toothbrush. Dr. Oz reported that water molecules explode into the air when a person flushes a toilet unless the person closes the lid prior to flushing. Those molecules have bacteria that can become harmful. He said the take away message is to close the toilet lid before flushing.

Dr. Oz teamed up with Tim Gunn, fashion expert, to support two women in their journey to reinvent their style after suffering from breast cancer. Dr. Oz also discussed healthy urine, how to increase one’s metabolism, and how to decrease bathroom germs.
