The co-hosts of The View discussed David Letterman’s controversial joke and a hate crime before interviewing the host of Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough, and Melissa Gilbert. Hot Topics on The ViewJoy Behar announced that she is getting her own show, The Joy Behar Show, beginning this fall. She assured the viewers that she would still remain on The View and thanked Barbara Walters for helping her to succeed. Barbara said that she was proud of Joy. David Letterman made a joke that many people found offensive about Sarah Palin’s daughter. Sarah Palin said that the joke was disgusting. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that she thought he was being an ignorant jerk when she heard the joke. They announced that David apologized. Whoopi Goldberg asked, “Did it go too far?” Barbara said that she has always been fond of David Letterman; however, it goes too far when someone makes fun of someone’s child. An 88 year old white supremacist shot and killed a black security guard in the U.S. Holocaust Museum the day before, and the women discussed this hate crime. Barbara said, “Anti-Semitism is alive in this country.” She stated that there are still residences and country clubs that continue to refuse Jewish people. Whoopi said, “Some people are angry the world is changing.” Former Republican Congressman Joe ScarboroughThe host of Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough, discussed his current job and thoughts about the Republican Party with The View co-hosts. He resigned from his position as a Republican Congressman in 2001. Barbara and Sherri both said that they love watching his show in the mornings. Joe explained that his show is different, because he has guests on for fifteen minutes and encourages guests that don’t agree with him to come on the program. They asked him about the future of the Republican Party, and he stated that the Republican Party will die if they don’t reform. Joe briefly discussed his book, The Last Best Hope: Restoring Conservatism and America’s Promise [Crown Forum, 2009]. Author and Actress Melissa GilbertMelissa Gilbert is well-known for her role as Laura Ingall in the Little House on the Prairie. She has written a book, Prairie Tale: A Memoir [Simon Spotlight Entertainment, 2009], about her life. She discussed her relationship with Michael Landon and her new book with the co-hosts of The View. Melissa talked about her adoption into a showbiz family and how she came to find out who her biological parents were. The View co-hosts asked her about her relationship with Rob Lowe.
