Dr. Oz informed viewers on how to reduce stress, how one viewer needs a lifestyle change, and the correlation between acupuncture and weight loss.

On the September 22, 2009 Dr. Oz show, Dr. Oz discussed how stress is a silent epidemic in America and how viewers can manage their stress. He also helped one viewer decide on necessary lifestyle changes and discussed how acupuncture can help with weight loss.

Epidemic of Stress and How to Reduce Stress

Dr. Oz reported that stress is targeting women in an alarming rate, and one half of all Americans have had their stress levels increase in the past five years. With the state of the economy, it’s evident that people need to learn stress management techniques. Dr. Oz reported that the top five cities in the United States with the highest levels of stress are Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Cleveland and Detroit. Chronic stress can increase heart disease, arthritis and depression and decrease a person’s life expectancy. A person’s organs are impacted by the release of cortisol due to chronic stress.

One of the doctors on the show recommended that everyone practice SELF care every day to reduce stress. The main components of SELF are serenity, exercise, love, and food. Dr. Oz completed an experiment with one viewer to see how stress was impacting her body and health. He found that the viewer had hypertension and needed immediate ways to manage stress. Dr. Oz reported that people can reduce their stress by doing four things:

  • Removing caffeine from one’s diet
  • Removing excess sugar from one’s diet
  • Eating foods with vitamin C to combat cortisol
  • Increasing endorphins by exercising, meditating, practicing yoga, and taking deep breaths

Viewer Makes Healthy Lifestyle Changes

Dr. Oz helped one viewer who was eating about two and a half pounds of saturated fat per week learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. The viewer reported that he was afraid of having a heart attack or stroke and he wanted to live to see his grandchildren grow up. He was experiencing pain on a daily basis due to his weight and diabetes. Dr. Oz challenged this viewer to eat a vegetarian diet for three weeks and reintroduce meat back into his diet on the fourth week. The viewer accepted the challenge.

Acupuncture and Weight Loss

Dr. Oz had an acupuncture specialist on the show to discuss the correlation between weight loss and acupuncture. The specialist reported that acupuncture stimulates specific points of the body and the brain. He reported that someone would have to complete a series of about ten treatments of acupuncture before seeing weight loss benefits. He also stated that acupuncture can help with joint pain, headaches, and insomnia.

Dr. Oz discussed how chronic stress impacts a person’s health and how to manage stress on a daily basis, how one viewer was ruining his health, and the correlation between weight loss and acupuncture.
