The View Co-Host Stumps for Palin in Tampa, Fla.Hasselbeck Calls Focus on VP Nominee's Wardrobe Deliberately Sexist
Elisabeth Hasselbeck of The View campaigned with Gov. Sarah Palin in Tampa on Sunday, October 26, 2008 and called the focus on Palin's wardrobe "deliberately sexist."
Last week, the Palin camp reached out to Hasselbeck and asked for her support during the Alaska Governor’s weekend Florida appearances. The former contestant on CBS’s reality show Survivor agreed to join the Republican vice presidential nominee in the Sunshine State. “I was pretty much excited to be able to talk for a full 5 minutes without being interrupted,” Hasselbeck told a crowd of more than 5,000 McCain-Palin supporters who filled a hall at the Tampa Convention Center during a Republican Road to Victory Rally. “If you watch The View you know my friends and I have been having passionate discussions about this election,” she added. Hasselbeck is often criticized for her conservative views by fellow co-hosts on the popular daytime television show. Attention to Gov. Sarah Palin’s Wardrobe: “Deliberately Sexist”Wearing a long green jacket accented with three bold gold-tone buttons, blue denim jeans and green peek-a-boo heels, Elisabeth Hasselbeck described the attention and flack given to Gov. Sarah Palin’s $150,000 wardrobe as “deliberately sexist.” She continued saying she was impressed with Palin’s accessories, not her eyeglasses which have spurred a new fashion trend, but “A flag pin she wears in honor of her son in the military (serving in Iraq).” Hasselbeck told supporters “they” don’t list the flag pin and its value in the reports. “You want to know why? Because they know it’s priceless.” When the Republican vice presidential nominee spoke, she told the crowd that the clothing is Republican National Committee property and described the media attention around her wardrobe as “ridiculous.” Gov. Sarah Palin said she was glad to have the “opportunity without filters of the media” to clarify “the whole clothing thing. They are not my property. “I’m back to wearing my own clothes from my favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska,” Palin said while pointing to her light pink jacket. She also wore a black pencil skirt and black pumps accented with beaded earrings made by her mother-in-law, an Inuit Eskimo. As for her wedding ring, the “First Dude of Alaska” (her husband Todd Palin) carries it while Palin campaigns because her hands are sometimes squeezed too hard. She paid $35 for the ring while in Hawaii. Gov. Sarah Palin and Campaign PromisesBoth Hasselbeck and Palin discussed American values and Sen. John McCain’s qualifications to become the next President of the United States. Palin made many campaign promises including cleaning up Wall Street, providing affordable health care and college, lowering income taxes, cutting capital gains taxes, doubling the child credit, generating jobs, providing a voice for families of special needs children, supplying adequate funding to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, reducing dependency on foreign oil by drilling safely in the U.S., and utilizing green energy resources such as wind and solar. Palin discussed her track record as Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska such as eliminating personal property taxes and lifting barriers hampering business growth to stimulate the economy. As Governor of Alaska, Palin said she vetoed half a billion dollars in wasteful spending. Gov. Sarah Palin on the Campaign TrailThis was Gov. Sarah Palin’s second visit to the Tampa Bay area in a month. Her first visit was to Clearwater on October 6. With 27 electoral votes at stake, Florida is a key swing state and both the Democratic and Republican parties have been campaigning and advertising heavily in the Sunshine State over the past few months and are expected to do so up until Election Day on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Florida Governor Charlie Crist, talk show host Sean Hannity, Christine the Florist, and a parade of Tampa Bay area politicians also participated in the Road to Victory Rally. Hasselbeck later joined Palin in Kissimmee, Florida for another Road to Victory Rally. Source:
