Dr. Oz and Dr. G from the Medical Examiner discussed the top five preventable deaths in women over the age of forty and how to prevent them from happening.
Dr. G, author of How Not to Die [Crown,2008], appeared on the Dr. Oz show on September 21, 2009 to discuss the prevalence of preventable deaths in women over the age of 40. She reported that half of the deaths that occur each year are preventable, and are caused by misinterpreting symptoms of heart disease, drug overdose, automobile accidents, falls, and liver problems. Misinterpreting Symptoms of Heart DiseaseDr. G reported that the number one cause of death among women over the age of forty is heart disease. She stated that thirty percent of people with heart disease don’t have symptoms, and women sometimes experience heart disease differently than men. Dr. Oz said that women should know their blood pressure, not ignore the symptoms of indigestion, and make sure they are getting omega-3 fatty acids in their diets. Drug OverdoseThe second cause of preventable death is drug overdose which is usually related to prescription medicine. Dr. Oz reported that women who take more than six medicines, including herbal supplements, are ninety-four percent more likely to have a detrimental drug interactionS. If a woman is taking this much medication, she should discuss it with her doctor. The signs that someone is slipping into a coma due to drug overdose is heavy snoring and frothing of the mouth. Dr. G said fluid builds up in the lungs and there is a distended bladder. Automobile AccidentsDr. G stated that at least seventy percent of automobile accidents are preventable. She reported that a person driving a car needs to consistently pay attention and keep distractions to a minimum. Dr. G said that half the people who die in car accidents aren’t wearing their seat belts. She reported that people die due to head trauma, abdominal trauma, and a tear to the aorta in car accidents. She recommended that women drive with the windows up for the safety of themselves and their children. Falls of All TypesThe fourth cause of preventable deaths is from falls. Twenty percent of women who break their hip will die from it. Once a person loses their ability to walk, they may become obese and are more likely to get pneumonia. Also, women die from stress on their hearts and blood clots. Women develop osteoporosis in their twenties and need to take action while they are young to prevent breaking bones in their old age. Dr. Oz recommended that women get enough calcium and vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis. Liver DamageChronic liver disease is the fifth preventable cause of death in women over forty. Dr. Oz stated that liver damage is caused by obesity, hepatitis C, and drinking. Dr. Oz recommended that women burnish fat and eat vegetables such as broccoli to detoxify the body. There are five main preventable causes of death in women over the age of forty. Dr. Oz and Dr. G discussed these causes of death and how to prevent them.
